Sports Injuries

Sports injuries are one of the most common issues our clients come to us to treat. With proper physiotherapy techniques your sports injury can be treated quickly and safely.

Sports Injuries by Amberlea Physiotherapy

Whether you are a weekend warrior or an elite professional athlete, your passion for your chosen sport is real and meaningful. Indeed, for many of us, our sports activities are not only what keep us fit and physically healthy, but also sane and happy. Which is why any sports injury – no matter how small or how big – is so much more than just a passing pain and a temporary inconvenience. Sports injuries can have a really big impact on our lives.

Fortunately, many sports injuries can be effectively healed, and prevented in the future, using specialized sports physiotherapy methods and techniques specifically designed to deal with sports-related injuries and to suit your body, your injury, and your chosen activity.

Sports injuries do differ to everyday injuries. The demands which high-energy activities place on the body means more stress on your muscles, joints and bones. What’s more, every sport has its own unique set of rules and regulations as well as specific physical demands on our body. At Amberlea Physiotherapy we take all that into account, as well as your body’s unique makeup, to design a sports injury rehabilitation plan which will have you back on your feet and in the game as quickly, and safely, as possible. Plus, we create those plans with your future in mind, strengthening you in all the right places to prevent future injuries.

Common Sports Injuries

Common sports injuries arise from participation in any number of sports and activities, including things like:

  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Running
  • Hockey
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Cycling
  • Baseball
  • Football
  • Gymnastics
  • Skiing
  • Swimming
  • Various gym related injuries or improper weight lifting techniques

The range of conditions related to these sports which we treat at Amberlea Physiotherapy, using our sports injury rehabilitation programs, include things like:

  • Acute, chronic and overuse sports injuries
  • Post-operative rehabilitation for common sports-related surgeries like ACL reconstruction, meniscus tears, and rotator cuff repair
  • Strains and sprains
  • Muscle, tendon and ligament repairs
  • Tendonitis and bursitis
  • Hand, wrist, foot and ankle injuries or dysfunction
  • Shoulder dislocation

Don’t see your specific concern or injury on the above list? At Amberlea Physiotherapy we assess every single case as unique so don’t hesitate to let us design a plan for whatever ails you.

How Physiotherapy Can Help with Your Sports Injury

Sports injury physiotherapy and rehabilitation is a safe, monitored, multi-disciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of current sports-related injuries, and the prevention of future injuries.

The methods and techniques we use at Amberlea Physiotherapy to help you bounce back from your sports injury include, but are not limited to:

Initial treatment to reduce pain and promote healing;
Reconditioning treatment;
Targeted exercises, treatment and massage to help you return to pre-injury function, flexibility and joint positioning;
Completely personalized, customized exercise programs to relieve you of any mobility restrictions incurred by your sports injury;
Strengthening and conditioning treatments and exercises to reduce your susceptibility to further sport-related injuries;
Strengthening and conditioning treatments and exercises to avoid a recurrence of your current injury.
All of which is aimed at getting you back to your peak athletic performance – no matter what level you’re at.

Of course, when you first sustain a sports injury there are things you can do immediately, at home, to help alleviate and treat the pain.

  • Rest: As anyone who’s ever been dealt a sports injury will tell you, rest is crucial. ‘No pain, no gain’ is NOT a smart move when it comes to exercising on top of injury! Two to three days of rest after injury is standard practice.
  • Ice: Use ice to help reduce pain and swelling associated with injuries like muscle tears, ligament sprains, and bruising.
  • Heat: Avoid using a heat pack or rub for the first 48 hours. After that you can apply heat to an injury (aim for 20 minutes at a time a few times a day) to increase blood flow, relax muscles, ease pain, and hasten healing. (Disclaimer: However, if after 48 hours you find you’re still in enough pain or have enough swelling to warrant heat, it’s time to start thinking about seeking professional help.)
  • Compress: A compressive bandage can help to control swelling and bleeding in the first few days.
  • Elevate: Elevation can help reduce swelling and is especially useful for ankle and hand injuries.

How do you know when it’s time to seek the help of a professional physiotherapist then? The sooner the better!

While the above DIY treatments certainly help in the immediate aftermath of any sports-related injury, research has shown that when it comes to quick, effective, long-term healing and a pain-free future, the sooner you start sports physiotherapy the better. The sooner you seek our help the sooner we can help you relieve any pain; improve scar tissue formation; get you back on your feet; and actually improve your performance when you do return to your sport or choice.

At our physiotherapy clinic, our sports injury physiotherapy services and rehabilitation experts are available to help sports men and women of all ages, engaged in all kinds of sports, and at any level of activity, be it professional or pleasure. Furthermore, our sports injury treatment plans are completely customized and personalized because we know that every detail counts when it comes to how your sports injury should be treated. Which sport you engage in; which position you play in a specific sport; different techniques used in your sport; how your own body responds to different movements and treatments – we look at it all. Our treatment plans are also informed by the latest research and state of the art clinical care, ensuring that you are receiving the very best treatment for long term sustainable recovery and ongoing sports success.
