Getting ready for winter!

Tips from your physiotherapist in Pickering,

With temperature still steady this year, it’s hard to imagine winter is coming.  However most of us are already getting ready and prepping for the eventual snow and coldness.  Fall is a time for outdoor clean up, leaves raking and changing into winter tires.  As we are talking about this, all these action requires quite a bit of physical labour, and we don’t want to strain and cause injuries.

Often with moving and cleaning, some of the common injuries may include back injuries.  Our backs are major support pillars are commonly irritated and inflammed due to various lifting and twisting motions.

For protecting our lower backs, we should always focus on keeping our activities in front of us as much as we can.  Avoid twisting and turning our backs by always turning with our feet.  Limit the amount of repetitive motion in our lower back by working smarter, for example having our tools within reach and in front of us.

For any activities that require bending, we should always think about involving our legs.  It is always best to bend our knees with any floor lifting. Never assume any weights are light enough to avoid this motion.  As well, ensure that we take breaks in between if you are trying to attempt a large project.  At the end of the day, your health is more important than rushing through things.
